You don't just rely on assumptions – you use real customer feedback.
No lectures. You work directly on your own startup.
We connect you with companies, pilot customers and experts.
“I have an idea that could make the world a better place — but no clue how to turn it into a company.”
Uncertainty, isolation, lack of entrepreneurial experience.
We help you validate your problem with real people — not behind closed doors.
“I've been working on my concept for months, but I've never talked to a real potential customer.”
Fear of launching, no access to pilot customers.
Through our network, you'll find the right people to talk to and the right pilot customers.
“I've built my product, but nobody is buying it.”
Looking for growth capital, no investor network, unsure about valuation and pitching.
Your pitch is built on real market results — not castles in the air.

Four out of ten startups fail because they solve a problem nobody has. That's why our program doesn't start with your idea, but with the problem. You get out there, have structured conversations with potential users — and let your target group decide what the problem is.
A problem validated through real conversations — and the certainty that you're working on something people really need.
You develop your vision, put a concrete mission into words and test your mission statement directly in conversations with potential customers. Experienced mentors and coaches from our network support you along the way.
A tested mission statement, a team with complementary strengths and at least one mentor by your side.
Build, measure, learn — repeat. As often as it takes until your approach demonstrably works. At the same time, you work on your unique selling points, impact and financial planning. The goal: market validation based on evidence, not assumptions.
A validated business model, clear positioning, an impact logic, a financial plan and a compelling pitch deck.
You develop your first market-ready product and build your brand. Our B2B network includes companies from the Ruhr area and the Rhine-Ruhr region that are actively looking for innovative solutions — whether as a pilot project, test customer or partnership.
A working first product, first customers or pilot partners, legal protection and a professional brand.
You get an overview of bootstrapping, public funding programs, business angels, venture capital and crowdfunding. Because you've already had dozens of conversations during the program, you don't walk into investor meetings with hopes — you walk in with evidence.
A clear financing plan, a well-practiced pitch based on real market results — and ideally your first concrete commitments.
No costs, no equity: we cover meals and accommodation for the mandatory sessions in Duisburg. After the program, you stay part of the community, for life.

We review all applications and ask promising teams for some further input. This lets us see how you work and how well you understand the problem. You'll have several weeks to complete it. That's all we're revealing for now!
If your submission is convincing, we'll invite you to a final online interview. Before admission, we really want to get to know you personally and make sure our mutual expectations match.
Shortly after the interview, you'll receive a final yes or no. Before the program starts in Duisburg, we invite you to a joint online kickoff to give you a deeper look into the program.
So you know how we evaluate your application, we make our criteria transparent.
Are you solving a real social or environmental problem that noticeably affects people?
What positive impact will you create if you succeed, and how can it be shown?
Do you have the skills or lived experience needed to tackle the topic successfully?
Do you have enough time to take part in the program?
You're open to feedback, take advice and adapt your idea when conversations with customers point in a different direction.
Why do you want to solve exactly this problem, and why now, with us?
You're at the beginning of your journey. The exact solution, target market or branding aren't the focus at this point. It should at least be plausible that someone will pay for your solution later on. Above all, we want to see that you're seriously driving your startup forward while staying open to feedback. In the end, it's the overall picture that counts for our selection!
About five months, five fixed on-site dates: the batch comes together at Villa Anthropia in Duisburg for the kickoff, three Community Weeks and the batch closing.
Kicking off the batch together: getting to know each other, Theory of Change, Product & Traction and Team Effectiveness
Product & Traction, Team Effectiveness & Resilience and peer exchange
Minimum Viable Branding, Team Effectiveness and peer exchange
Product & Traction, Team Effectiveness & Resilience and peer exchange
Celebrating what we've achieved together: pitch event, outlook and of course a closing party
Between the in-person dates, we offer online formats: workshops with experts or input from other founders. Participation is voluntary – you take away whatever fits your stage. You'll get the dates during the program.

Have you shown as an active participant in your batch that you want to be part of the community for the long run? Then after these first six months it's: Welcome Home! You stay on as a permanent member of the community.
As an Impact Factory community member, our doors are always open to you. Join our workshops, events and networking formats again and again, or connect with other startups and contacts from the supporter ecosystem.
Here we answer the most common questions about the program, the application process and the Impact Factory.
Please note: because we are changing our program structure, some information may temporarily be out of date. Write to us if anything is unclear.
The active program runs for about 6 months in total. During this time, we meet roughly every 2 weeks for 2-3 days. Selected dates, 5 in total, are mandatory. There are also special sessions at the start and the end: our bootcamp kickoff and the batch closing. So per batch, you'll effectively spend between 7 and 14 days with us over six months. You'll find the exact dates listed further below.
Our program is hybrid, alternating between online and in-person. About every four weeks, we meet in person on the Haniel Campus in Duisburg: these are our "Community Weeks". As one of our funding partners, Haniel provides us with our own space (the “Villa Anthropia”), among other things. We can also use their wider infrastructure there for events and more.
Our startups come from all over Germany, so you don't need to live in Duisburg to apply. While you take part in the program, you can use the Impact Factory's space and infrastructure for co-working Monday through Friday and attend internal events. We see the exchange at in-person events as an essential part of the Impact Factory. That's why we do not offer online-only participation in the program.
The Impact Factory program is designed to meet each startup's individual needs. Some program content is mandatory, other parts you can choose as needed.
Our focus is to build a market-ready product and traction over the course of the program. Together with you, and you together as a batch, we work as intensively as possible on your model. We turn assumptions into hypotheses and hypotheses into validated statements. Based on that, you keep developing your product and test it again and again with real test users and potential customers.
We can also work on targeted topics, including the following:
- Marketing
- Sales
- Business plan
- (Impact) financing & investment
- Pricing
- Legal advice & tax topics
- Pitch (pitch deck, performance, approaching investors)
- Impact measurement & management
Finally, we organize various networking events where you can connect with interesting people, and our (public) pitch formats give you a feel for presenting your idea to an audience or even to investors.
In short: time and reliability in everything we agree on, nothing more!
More specifically, we expect you to attend the event dates, work intensively on your idea and have serious intentions of founding a company. This includes wanting to become financially sustainable in the medium term, so you can fund the company and yourselves.
We also hope you'll embrace the iterative process and adapt or change your business idea based on market conditions if needed. And we'd love for you to become an active part of the community and spread the idea that entrepreneurial initiatives with impact can make the world a better place.
We'd also like to be able to feature you and your startup on social media and elsewhere. This makes the program even better known, so we can support even more people in making the world a little better. Of course, just let us know if parts of your idea can't be shown on social media & co. yet for patent or similar reasons.
If you need to adjust or pause your participation, e.g. due to personal challenges, you can still remain part of the community.
The Incubator covers all startups from idea validation to market entry. This means you should bring at least an idea for a socially relevant problem that you want to validate (problem-solution fit). Startups that already have an MVP get our support with their market entry (product-market fit).
If you're already more established and have a product on the market and a team, take a closer look at our Accelerator program IFA NRW.
You'll find more details on our program pages.
Our program is currently generally held in German. This means at least one member of your startup should speak German at a solid level. We occasionally switch to English, but we can't guarantee it throughout.
As long as you meet this minimum, you're of course welcome to apply as an international team. We have no further rules, e.g. regarding place of residence.
We support you financially indirectly by providing funds for specific advisory services (e.g. initial consultations & Q&A sessions with (patent) lawyers, pitch deck pros, tax experts). In addition, many exciting speakers join the program and share practical tips & tricks (e.g. from the perspective of a “real investor”: what matters in an investor pitch).
The program is worth around 25,000 euros.
As part of the program, we of course help you find possible funding opportunities for your startup. We have a large network, so where it makes sense we can connect you with investors and business angels as well as potential customers.
Yes, participation in the Impact Factory program is free of charge. Our funding partners also want to make the world a little better with your help.
Please note that we cannot reimburse travel costs for in-person dates.
For mandatory in-person dates, we reimburse teams traveling from further away (>30 km) for part or all of their hotel costs, depending on the price, so you can take part without major extra costs.
Neither we nor our funding partners take any equity in your startup. As a joint initiative of the founding partners Beisheim Stiftung, Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, KfW Stiftung and Anthropia gGmbH, with support from program partner Der Paritätische NRW, the program is financed through grants. Our funders' commitment is based on a shared desire to promote innovative and sustainable business models and a future-proof economy. So: while we're of course happy to drive forward any partnerships you want, none of us intends for your startup to be “swallowed up” by a company!
The program is aimed at founders from all over Germany who want their business idea to create human, social and/or environmental value (green or social impact) and whose idea is financially viable. You can apply with a promising idea or with a product you now want to bring to market. It doesn't matter whether you've already founded your company or not.
Applications from individuals are just as welcome as applications from teams. In our evaluation, we pay particular attention to whether you can realistically complete the program. We need a commitment of your time and participation.
As an impact incubator & accelerator, the common thread across all teams is your impact. It looks completely different depending on the business model, but it is the most important criterion for our support. Here you'll find an overview of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Our definition of “impact” is guided, among other things, by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If you contribute to one or more of these goals, the Impact Factory is the right place for you.
In general, we rule out almost no idea across the board, as long as it credibly shows an impact orientation. However, there are cases where, in our experience, our work delivers less effective results or does not align with our own statutory purpose:
1. Applications from individuals are just as welcome as applications from teams. Please note, however, that in the medium term we train startup founders, not sole proprietors. This means we exclude ventures by individuals who, for example, want to offer a coaching service that is directly and permanently tied to them as a person. In that case, the scalability criterion is missing.
2. The same applies to startups that operate purely as consultancies, e.g. for sustainability services. Here we're looking for clear innovation.
3. One of the few exclusion criteria is business models that appear on common impact blacklists. This means, for example, that we do not support alcohol or gambling.
Please allow enough time for your application. We estimate that filling out our application form will take at least about 60 minutes. If you haven't written much down yet, it may take considerably longer!
In the form, we ask you for the following:
1. Key facts and contact details about your startup and about you as founders
2. You'll work on several texts that explain details about you, your startup and your motivation. Please be honest: "fake it till you make it" doesn't help us and will be rated negatively!
3. Your Value Proposition Canvas: with this method, you show us how deeply you've explored your market so far. We want to see which assumptions you derive from it.
4. Optionally, you can send us: A team photo. If you don't have a group photo yet or are a solo founder, individual photos are fine too. Please combine individual photos of several people into a collage. Attachments. At the end, you can also send us further attachments such as pitch decks.
Yes. If your company was founded fairly recently and you're looking for the right market entry strategy, you can apply. You'll especially benefit from personal, needs-based support and advice, as well as our network of companies, institutions and civil society players.
Our program is designed so that both aspiring founders with a first business idea (Incubator) and those looking for support with market entry (Accelerator) can join. If you're a more advanced team, take a closer look at the Accelerator program.
Yes. Because sustainable financing of your organization matters to us for creating long-term impact, we'll take an even closer look at your business model as part of the Impact Factory program.
After the application deadline, we go through each application and select the most promising ones. Our application process has two stages. First, we get in touch with you by phone or video call. If you and your idea convince us, we invite you to a joint online get-to-know-you session (selection day).
After the application deadline, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks until we first contact you, since we need to review all applications and schedule calls. Our selection camp takes place about 2 to 4 weeks after that. You'll get the admission decision very shortly after the selection camp. The process is designed so that we make our selection before the summer or Christmas break, get to know each other at the bootcamp, and actively start the regular program after these breaks.
Besides the idea, we mainly look at your motivation, your commitment and your interest in a sustainable business model. You should also be willing to adapt your initial idea in order to achieve greater impact. So we place great value on your willingness to work on your startup with focus and to question your own assumptions.
In the first step, we assess, with different weightings, how relevant we consider the described problem, how well your solution addresses it, how we rate your market opportunities, how your team is set up and, of course, how big your (potential) impact is.
Readiness: improve your growth readiness
Holistic preparation for growth: this includes optimizing your product-market fit (including increasing your product's effectiveness), strengthening team building and HR management, and building efficient structures and processes. Implementing suitable governance structures, a scalable IT infrastructure and advice on the right legal form (e.g. non-profit or hybrid company forms) are also part of this field. We make sure every startup has the foundations it needs to grow in a healthy way.
Financing: find the right capital
Strengthening the financial base: we help teams determine their future capital needs and support them in dealing with investors and funders. Through our network, we connect them with business angels, specialized impact funds and banks in NRW. We prepare startups for funding rounds, from pitch deck and strategy to negotiations and closing.
Growth & sales: successfully tap into the market
Support with market expansion, sales and growth: we help further improve product-market fit and build scalable marketing and sales strategies. This also includes optimizing internal processes and building strategic partnerships to enter new markets. Through dedicated pitch events and investor meetings, startups gain access to funders. We also encourage peer-to-peer exchange between the participating startups so they can learn from and support each other.
Impact optimization: maximize social value
This field of action is a key USP of IFA NRW. We help startups systematically increase their social and environmental impact. Specifically, we support impact planning (e.g. developing a theory of change), building integrated KPI systems (combining financial and impact KPIs), and impact analysis and measurement. This ensures that growth always goes hand in hand with a focus on the common good.
Communication & PR: increase visibility
We help startups sharpen their brand and tell their story effectively so they gain more visibility and support. This includes developing a communication strategy (clarifying brand profile and target audience messaging) and sharing best practices in PR. The young companies can use synergies with Anthropia gGmbH's communication channels and benefit from their reach.
We want to train you to work efficiently and in a future-proof way as startups, so we want to lead by example:
Instead of long blocks of text, you can ask all your detailed questions to our chatbot on the IFA program page (button at the bottom right) and get interactive answers. It has been trained on numerous documents and knowledge from us and can also individually assess your startup and its fit with our program.
The Impact Factory is a joint initiative of the founding partners Beisheim Stiftung, Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, KfW Stiftung and Anthropia gGmbH, with support from program partner Der Paritätische NRW. So the Impact Factory is the joint project of these partners. This project includes the fellowship of the Impact Factory Incubator and all its components, such as the startup community. With the launch of the Accelerator program in 2025, we are further specializing our offers for early-stage and more advanced startups.
Anthropia gGmbH is responsible for running the program. Anthropia receives additional support from the funding partners Copper Oak Ventures, Eurasia Group and the Postcode Lottery. The green electricity provider Yello is also a sponsor.
Since May 2025, the Impact Factory Accelerator has been funded as a project by the state of NRW. The various focus areas (impact clusters) are also supported by Krefeld Business, the economic development agency of the City of Dortmund, Duisburg Business & Innovation (DBI), the Röchling Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator, the IHK zu Düsseldorf, the IHK Mittleres Ruhrgebiet, the IHK zu Essen and the IHK Nordwestfalen.
Ultimately, the program is managed and run by the staff of Anthropia gGmbH: that's us, the team behind the Impact Factory! All Impact Factory funding goes to Anthropia gGmbH, and we use it exclusively to run the program.
The Impact Factory startup programs are and will remain Anthropia's largest and most important project, which is why the two names are sometimes used almost interchangeably. However, because our funding is earmarked and for legal reasons, there has to be a separation between us as a company and the program. In the long term, we at Anthropia also want to dedicate ourselves to other projects and tasks in green & social entrepreneurship. You can find out more about Anthropia here.
As the organization responsible for the entire project, we as Team Anthropia of course report regularly to our funding partners about our work. In an annual impact report, we capture the “impact of the Impact Factory”, so to speak. Beyond that, we stay in touch to define strategic goals. However, Team Anthropia shapes the day-to-day operations and the specific use of funds within the Impact Factory itself.
The funding partners are directly involved in Impact Factory processes mainly at the start and end of each six-month program: after the pre-selection by Team Anthropia, representatives of the funding partners make up part of the selection camp jury. The same applies to the batch closing. However, the final decision for or against teams is always made by Team Anthropia.
Our funders' commitment is based on our shared desire to promote innovative and sustainable business models and a future-proof economy through entrepreneurship. So: while we're of course happy to drive forward the partnerships you want, none of us intends for your startup to be “swallowed up” by a company (no “locusts” here)! The same goes for your startup ideas: the funding partners of course do not “steal ideas”. They also have no direct access to your application data and documents at the start. At the earliest, we share your video and application profile with them at the selection camp so they can prepare for your ideas.
These dates mainly apply to the Incubator. Please check the program page for the Accelerator dates. In addition to these in-person dates, there are online offers that we'll tell you about during the application process. Individual changes may follow.
