The active program runs for about 4 months in total. During this time, we meet roughly every 2 weeks for 2–3 days. Selected dates, 5 in total, are mandatory. There are also special sessions at the start and the end – our kickoff bootcamp and the batch finale. So per batch, you'll effectively spend between 4 and 14 days with us over a period of 4–6 months. You'll find the exact dates listed below.
Our program is hybrid – alternating between online and on site. About every four weeks, we meet in person at our space on the Haniel Campus in Duisburg – these are our "Community Weeks". As one of our funding partners, Haniel provides us with our own premises (“Villa Anthropia”), among other things. We can also use their wider infrastructure there for events and more.
Our startups come from all over Germany – you don't need to live in Duisburg to apply. While you take part in the program, you can use Impact Factory's premises and infrastructure for coworking from Monday to Friday and attend internal events. We see the exchange at in-person events as an essential part of Impact Factory. That's why we don't offer an online-only option for the program.
The Impact Factory program is designed to meet each startup's individual needs. We recommend some content to get you started, but for the most part, you decide on your own personal program.
We offer different formats such as workshops, talks and office hours, which you can choose based on your level of knowledge and attend with different members of your team. This way, we make sure every team develops the most important startup skills.
Across every stage, we cover topics such as:
- Marketing
- Sales
- Business plan
- (Impact) financing & investment
- Pricing
- Legal advice & tax matters
- Pitching (pitch deck, delivery, approaching investors)
- Collaboration formats and peer learning within the community
- Impact measurement & management
Finally, we organize a range of networking events where you can connect with interesting people, and our (public) pitch formats give you a feel for presenting your idea to an audience or even to investors.
At the end of a batch, we look back together at the milestones you've reached and at how we can keep supporting you as permanent community members – provided you've met your commitments (= time & reliability) during the batch.
In short: time and reliability in everything we agree on – that's it!
More specifically, we expect you to attend the scheduled events, work intensively on your idea and have a serious intention to found a company. That also means aiming to become financially sustainable in the medium term, so you can fund the company and yourselves.
We also hope you'll embrace the iterative process and adapt or change your business idea to market conditions where needed. And we'd love for you to become an active part of the community and spread the idea that the world can be made better through entrepreneurial initiatives with impact.
We'd also like to be able to feature you and your startup on social media and elsewhere. That way, the program becomes even better known and we can support even more people in making the world a little better. Of course, just let us know if parts of your idea can't be shown on social media & co. yet for patent or similar reasons.
Our funding partners also receive regular updates on the startup ideas so they can see where their donated money goes – and where in the world they can make an impact through you.
If you need to adjust or pause your participation, for example because of personal challenges, you can still remain part of the community.
The Incubator covers all startups from idea validation to market entry. This means you should at least bring an idea for a socially relevant problem that you want to validate (problem-solution fit). For startups that already have an MVP, we support their market entry (product-market fit).
If you're more established and already have a product on the market and a team, take a closer look at our accelerator program, IFA NRW.
You'll find more details on our program pages.
Our program is currently held in German as a rule. This means at least one member of your startup should speak German at a solid level. We occasionally switch to English, but we can't guarantee it throughout.
As long as you meet this minimum, you're of course welcome to apply as an international team. We have no further rules, e.g. regarding where you live.
We support you financially indirectly by providing funds for specific advisory services (e.g. initial consultations & Q&A sessions with (patent) lawyers, pitch deck pros and tax experts). On top of that, lots of exciting speakers join the program and share practical tips & tricks with you (e.g. from the point of view of a “real investor”: what matters in an investor pitch).
The program is worth about 20,000 to 30,000 euros.
As part of the program, we'll of course help you find possible funding options for your startup. We have a large network, so where it makes sense we can connect you with investors and business angels as well as potential customers.
Yes, taking part in the Impact Factory program is free of charge. Our funding partners also want to make the world a little better with your help.
Please note that attending the mandatory sessions, which take place on site in Duisburg every four weeks, involves travel costs that we can't reimburse.
For mandatory dates, we provide one single or double room per startup for overnight stays, plus meals on site. The same allowance applies to everyone. This means teams that come with significantly more people have to cover the cost of additional rooms themselves. That's the only way we can make sure everyone is treated roughly equally.
Neither we nor our funding partners ask for equity in your startup. As a joint initiative of the founding partners Beisheim Stiftung, Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, KfW Stiftung and Anthropia gGmbH, supported by program partner Der Paritätische NRW, the program is financed through grant funding. Our funders' commitment is based on a shared desire to promote innovative, sustainable business models and a future-proof economy. So: while we'll of course push forward any collaborations you want, none of us has any intention of letting your startup be “swallowed up” by a company!
The program is aimed at founders from all over Germany whose business idea aims to create human, social and/or environmental value (green or social impact) and is financially viable. You can apply either with a promising idea (Early 1) or with a product you now want to bring to market (Early 2). It doesn't matter whether you've already incorporated or not.
Applications from individuals are just as welcome as applications from teams.
As an impact incubator & accelerator, what connects all our teams is your impact. It looks completely different depending on the business model, but it's the most important criterion for our support. Here you'll find an overview of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda. Among other things, our definition of “impact” is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If you contribute to one or more of these goals, Impact Factory is the right place for you.
In general, we rule out almost no idea across the board, as long as it credibly shows an impact focus. However, there are cases where, in our experience, our work delivers less good results or doesn't fit our own statutory purpose:
1. Applications from individuals are just as welcome as applications from teams. Please note, however, that in the medium term we train startup founders, not sole proprietors. This means we tend to rule out businesses founded by individuals who, for example, want to offer a coaching service that is directly and permanently tied to them as a person. In that case, the criterion of scalability is missing. As an alternative, founders with this kind of business model can check whether funding or a grant from the German Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) is possible – you'll find more on this here, among other places.
2. The same applies to startups that operate purely as consultancies, e.g. for sustainability services. Here, we're looking for clear innovation.
3. One of the few exclusion criteria is business models that appear on common impact blacklists. This means, for example, that we don't support alcohol or gambling.
Please allow enough time for your application. We estimate that filling out our application form will take at least about 30 minutes. If you don't have much written up yet, it may take quite a bit longer!
In the form, we'll ask you for the following:
1. Key facts and contact details for your startup and for you as founders
2. You'll work on several short texts explaining who you are, your startup and your motivation. In some places, we deliberately ask for specific formats so we can pick them up again during the program.
3. You choose a self-assessment of your startup's maturity. Based on your choice, you'll get different follow-up questions so we can better understand where you stand.
4. Optionally, you can send us a short video of about 1 minute – simply filmed on your smartphone or laptop, for example. It helps us get a better impression of you and your idea. That also means: don't worry about a glossy production!
5. A team photo. If you don't have a group photo yet or you're a solo founder, individual photos are fine too. Please combine individual photos of several people into a collage.
6. Optional: Finally, you can send us further attachments, such as pitch decks.
Yes. If your company is relatively newly founded and you're looking for the right market entry strategy, you can apply. You'll especially benefit from personal, needs-based support and advice as well as our network of companies, institutions and civil society players.
Our program is designed so that both aspiring founders with a first business idea (Early) and those looking for support with market entry (Scale) can join.
Yes. Because sustainable financing of your organization matters to us for achieving long-term impact, we'll take an even closer look at your business model as part of the Impact Factory program.
Yes. Your project should be able to finance itself in the long term. We can also develop a business model together during the program. Of course, your chances improve if you can convincingly show us that the idea has potential.
Once the application deadline has passed, we go through each application and select the most promising ones. Our application process has two stages. First, we get in touch with you by phone. If you and your idea convince us, we invite the Early teams to a joint online get-to-know-you event (selection camp). The Scale teams receive an acceptance or rejection after the interviews. If it's a fit for both sides, you'll be accepted into our program.
After the application deadline, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks until we first contact you, since we need to review all applications and schedule interviews. Our selection camp takes place about 2 to 4 weeks after that. You'll get our admission decision very shortly after the selection camp. The process is designed so that we make our selection before the summer or Christmas holidays, get to know each other at the bootcamp and start the regular program after the break.
Besides the idea, we mainly look at your motivation, your commitment and your interest in a sustainable business model. You should also be willing to adapt your initial idea in order to achieve greater impact.
In the first step, we assess – with different weightings – how relevant we consider the described problem, how well your solution addresses it, how we rate your market opportunities, how your team is set up and, of course, how big your (potential) impact is.
While the online application already gives us a good impression of the idea, the first interview and the selection camp let us focus more on the people behind it. We do take a closer look at you, your ideas and the way you work, but the selection camp isn't a tough elimination round – it's much more about getting to know each other. In fact, most of the teams that take part are accepted!
Readiness – getting ready for growth
Holistic preparation for growth: this includes optimizing your product-market fit (including increasing your product's effectiveness), strengthening team building and HR management, and setting up efficient structures and processes. Implementing suitable governance structures, a scalable IT infrastructure and advice on the right legal form (e.g. nonprofit or hybrid company structures) are also part of this area. We make sure every startup has the foundations it needs to grow in a healthy way.
Funding – finding the right capital
Strengthening the financial base: we help teams determine their future capital needs and support them in dealing with investors and funders. Through our network, we connect them with business angels, specialized impact funds and banks in NRW. We prepare the startups for funding rounds – from pitch deck and strategy to negotiations and closing.
Growth & sales – successfully entering the market
Support with market expansion, sales and growth: we help further improve product-market fit and build scalable marketing and sales strategies. This also includes optimizing internal processes and building strategic partnerships to enter new markets. Through special pitch events and investor meetings, the startups gain access to funders. We also encourage peer-to-peer exchange among the participating startups so they can learn from and support each other.
Impact optimization – maximizing social value
This focus area is a key USP of IFA NRW. We help the startups systematically increase their social and environmental impact. Specifically, we support impact planning (e.g. developing a theory of change), building integrated KPI systems (combining financial and impact KPIs) and impact analysis and measurement. This way, we make sure growth always goes hand in hand with a focus on the common good.
Communication & PR – increasing visibility
We help the startups sharpen their brand and tell their story effectively so they gain more visibility and support. This includes developing a communication strategy (clarifying brand profile and target audience messaging) and sharing PR best practices. The young companies can use synergies with Anthropia gGmbH's communication channels and benefit from its reach.
We want to train you to work efficiently and in a future-proof way as startups, so we want to lead by example:
Instead of long blocks of text, you can ask all your detailed questions to our chatbot on the IFA program page (button at the bottom right) and get interactive answers. It has been fed with lots of our documents and knowledge and can even give you an individual assessment of your startup and its fit with our program.
Impact Factory is a joint initiative of the founding partners Beisheim Stiftung, Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, KfW Stiftung and Anthropia gGmbH, supported by program partner Der Paritätische NRW. So Impact Factory is the shared project of these partners. It includes the fellowship of the Impact Factory Incubator and all its components, such as the startup community. With the launch of the accelerator program in 2025, we're further specializing our offerings for early-stage and more advanced startups.
Anthropia gGmbH is responsible for running the program. Anthropia receives additional support from funding partners Copper Oak Ventures and the Eurasia Group. Green energy provider Yello is also a sponsor.
Since May 2025, the Impact Factory Accelerator has been funded as a project by the state of NRW. For the different focus areas (impact clusters), we're also supported by Krefeld Business, the Dortmund economic development agency and greenhouse ruhr, Duisburg Business & Innovation (DBI) and the Röchling Stiftung.
Ultimately, the program is managed and run by the staff of Anthropia gGmbH – that's us, the team behind Impact Factory! All Impact Factory funding goes to Anthropia gGmbH, and we use it exclusively to run the program.
Impact Factory's startup programs are and will remain Anthropia's largest and most important project, which is why the two names are sometimes used almost interchangeably. However, because our funding is earmarked and for legal reasons, there has to be a separation between us as a company and the program. In the long term, Anthropia also wants to take on further projects and tasks in the field of green & social entrepreneurship. You can find more about Anthropia here.
As the organization responsible for the entire project, we as Team Anthropia of course report regularly to our funding partners on our work. In an annual impact report, we document the “impact of Impact Factory”, so to speak. We also stay in touch to set strategic goals. However, Team Anthropia shapes the day-to-day operations and decides how the funding is actually used within Impact Factory.
The funding partners are directly involved in Impact Factory processes mainly at the start and end of each program half-year: after Team Anthropia's pre-selection, representatives of the funding partners make up part of the jury at the selection camp. The same applies to the batch finale. However, the final decision for or against teams is always made by Team Anthropia.
Our funders' commitment is based on our shared desire to promote innovative, sustainable business models and a future-proof economy through entrepreneurship. So: while we'll of course push forward any collaborations you want, none of us has any intention of letting your startup be “swallowed up” by a company (no corporate raiders here)! The same goes for your startup ideas: the funding partners naturally don't “steal ideas”. Nor do they have direct access to your application data and documents at the start. We share your video and application profile with them at the selection camp at the earliest, so they can prepare for your ideas.
These dates mainly apply to the Incubator. Please check the program page for the Accelerator dates. Individual changes may follow.
